EP-Books: A Sanctuary for Urban Readers

Cheng Hui Hsin's Innovative Design Merges Bookstore, Living Space, and Café

EP-Books, a unique reading space nestled in a quiet alley of bustling Taipei, is a testament to the innovative design prowess of Cheng Hui Hsin. This award-winning project redefines the traditional bookstore concept, merging it with a living space and café, and creating an environment that encourages exploration, serenity, and community interaction.

The design of EP-Books is inspired by the desire to maximize the efficiency of a bookstore while providing a tranquil retreat for urban dwellers. The space is characterized by different shades of wood and black color, which not only magnify the shapes of space but also express the spirit of industrial style. The high bar table near the drinking counter creates a homely atmosphere where visitors can relax while engaging in casual conversations.

EP-Books stands out for its strategic use of natural elements. Extensive windows allow ample light, reducing power consumption and enhancing the ambiance. An openable window facilitates air circulation, offering an outdoor reading experience. The different floor materials used in each area not only add to the interior's diversity but also clearly demarcate each zone.

The realization of this design involved a careful selection of colors and materials. Dark wood lines extending from the ceiling to the floor connect black with light color, creating visual layers. The bookshelves, painted in dark gray, are complemented by soft tint pine and sharp steel pieces, setting off the colorful book covers and contributing to the overall modern yet slightly retro aesthetic.

The design process, which took place between January and July 2017, was influenced by the surrounding environment. Large windows were incorporated into the design to allow readers to enjoy the beautiful view and atmosphere. The challenge of preventing the store from appearing messy due to the many colors of the books was overcome by using a simple achromatic color scheme.

EP-Books has been recognized for its remarkable design, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, creativity, and innovation. Cheng Hui Hsin's EP-Books is indeed a testament to these qualities, offering a unique and serene reading space for the urban dweller.
